The Heather Cannon Wildcat of the Week #13 for the 2021-2022 School Year was presented to Po-Hi junior Lane Briggs. Superintendent Shelley Arrott said, “Lane is a Wildcat who excels in the classroom and on the court! He challenges himself by taking AP courses at the high school, and Lane’s teachers all agree he is a great student who pushes himself in class and is always respectful and prepared. In addition, Lane is a member of the PO-HI Wildcat Basketball Team. Coach McFarlin was super excited for Lane to be named the Wildcat of the Week because he said he is a hard worker and sets the perfect example of being a Wildcat. One example of Lane’s work ethic and discipline occurred a couple of weeks ago before the Wildcats left to go to the Ada Tournament. Lane went to one of his teachers, Mr. Miller, to let him know that he would not be in class on Thursday and Friday because of the tournament. He told his teacher that he would have his work completed and ready to submit on Monday morning. Mr. Miller said he was prompt to class on Monday and had the work he missed ready to turn in just like he said he would.”
“Lane it was so much fun to present the Wildcat of the Week Award to you during basketball practice. Of course, your team had no clue you were receiving the award and they obviously knew why I was there. Everyone surrounded around and listened intently as I went through the characteristics of the Wildcat Way and told everyone that this week’s award recipient was someone on the boys’ basketball team. When I called your name, your team erupted with cheers, whoops, hollers, and they chanted your name. That tells me that not only do your teachers and coaches think you are an amazing Wildcat, but your teammates do too! They even whooped and hollered about your Danny’s BBQ Headquarters meal gift certificate. I think they may be going with you to cash in.”
You may not remember, but I walked in Robson at the same time you and your friend were walking into Robson. I know YOU did not know you were receiving the award, but I knew! You were so polite; you pointed out which door was unlocked, held the door open for me, and asked me how I was doing and carried on a friendly little conversation. You were not buried in your phone and you were fully present, which is something we all need to work on! I thought to myself, ‘What a great kid.’ In fact, every one of our staff members I conversed with about you ALL said the same thing – He is such a great kid! Everyone also said you go over and above to recognize and be kind to others. I certainly witnessed that first hand, and if your teammates go over and above to cheer you on when you receive an award, I would say it is clear they know that about you too. Thanks for being so kind and respectable to staff and all students. It is easy to get caught up in the frustrations these turbulent times are causing, but you, Lane, are a constant reminder of the good in the world! “
“Your school family, your home family, and your community are so proud of you, Lane! I know you are preparing yourself for a great future as you aspire to go to OSU and become a mechanical engineer! You possess that perfect trifecta of pushing yourself to improve, having the discipline to take care of your responsibilities so that you stay focused on your goals, and maintaining a strong work ethic. Thanks for representing PCPS with such class!”
