OKLAHOMA CITY – State Sen. Darrell Weaver, R-Moore, has been named commissioner of a national law enforcement organization aimed at improving public safety. The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA), is known as the “gold standard in public safety,” and was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through the joint efforts of law enforcement’s major executive associations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the National Sheriffs’ Association and the Police Executive Research Forum.
“I am deeply honored to be appointed commissioner for CALEA. I’ve dedicated my life to strengthening public safety in our state, and I’m blessed to be able to continue that work in the Oklahoma Senate,” Weaver said. “This organization’s mission is to enhance public safety throughout the country, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to offer my experience and perspectives to that effort.”
Weaver was first elected to represent the Senate District 24 seat in 2018. He previously served as director of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs and retired after 28 years of service. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Oklahoma Christian University and a Bachelor of Accounting from Cameron University. Weaver is a graduate of the 199th Session of the FBI National Academy and of the Senior Management Institute for Police. In 2014, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Hall of Fame.
The purpose of CALEA’s accreditation programs is to improve the delivery of public safety services by maintaining a body of standards developed by public safety practitioners, covering a wide range of up-to-date public safety initiatives.
The organization’s goals are to strengthen crime prevention and control capabilities; formalize essential management procedures; establish fair and nondiscriminatory personnel practices; improve service delivery; solidify interagency cooperation and coordination; and increase community and staff confidence in the agency.
