TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — Melanie Herrera was arrested after driving over downed power lines early Sunday morning.
Right after the severe weather hit around 1 a.m. multiple police officers responded to 3100 South 169 southbound where a car was stalled with power lines on it.
Around 2:40 a.m. a vehicle in the northbound lanes drove through the downed power lines, causing the lines to wrap around Officer Talley’s patrol unit.
A man, who was broken down on the highway, came to check on Talley who wasn’t inside his vehicle when the power lines were around it.
About 10 minutes later, a black Dodge Charger, driven by Herrera, drove around the barricades and ignored Talley’s flashlight and waving motion.
Herrera stuck downed power lines, but kept driving over 65 mph.
The impact of Herrera driving over the power lines caused some of the lines to wrap around the man’s leg and dragged him about 50 yards, severing his left leg below the knee.
Talley applied two tourniquets to the man before EMSA and paramedics arrived at the scene.
He was taken to he hospital, underwent surgery and is now recovering.
Officers tracked down and arrested Herrera.
