TULSA POLICE OFFICER SHOT DURING ALTERCATION

Two people were shot Sunday morning, including a Tulsa Police officer, during an altercation near East 71st Street and South Lewis Avenue.

The incident happened at about 8:40 a.m. when two officers pulled over a vehicle for not having a registered tag.

According to police, the driver of a black BMW pulled into a nearby driveway, gave the officer a fake name, and proceeded to initiate some kind of scuffle with an officer.

When officers attempted to detain the suspect, a struggle ensued and the suspect attempted to retrieve his pistol from his waistband.

Captain Richard Meulenberg with the Tulsa Police Department said, “He did have a pistol in his waistband, that pistol, either he took it out or it went off, the officer was shot in the foot and then the other officer returned fire.”

The suspect’s pistol discharged striking himself and the officer, due to the suspect’s actions the other officer fired a round at the suspect.

Neither the name of the suspect involved in the incident nor the name of the police officer has been released. It is not known whether the suspect had any warrants or prior arrests.

According to police, the officer has non-life threatening injuries. The extent of the injuries to the driver are unknown.
