Transportation Department preparing for icy road conditions

Team Radio Marketing Group - January 15, 2018 8:58 am

Crews in Ottawa, Craig, Nowata, Washington and Osage Counties in northeastern Oklahoma are treating and plowing roads and bridges. Motorists are advised to use caution on bridges in the area and be alert to changing conditions.

Crews will continue plowing operations as needed and other area crews will remain on standby, ready to respond as precipitation moves through.

With temperatures below freezing across the state, drivers should be alert to any changing conditions and use caution on bridges and overpasses in these areas and check conditions before heading out.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:

• Stay at least 150 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.

• Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.

• Be aware of “black ice,” which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.

• Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
