Students creating Ponca City tourism sites geared toward teens

Rich Cantillon, President of the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Office, shared his tourism expertise with East Middle School in the “Introduction to Technology” class.
The 8th graders are creating Ponca City Tourism sites geared toward teenagers. To help students hone in on locations unique to Ponca City, Cantillon suggested that students ask themselves, “Why would I come and see this attraction over any other?”
He reminded students of the local treasures found in Ponca City, such as the Marland Mansion, Matzene Asian Art Collection dating back to the 1600s, Head Country, and the lobby art at The Poncan Theater.
Students at East Middle School participated in a 1:1 Chromebook initiative. Every student checked out a Chromebook at the beginning of the year and had the constant use of it, carrying the devices home every night.
Chromebooks use Google’s operating system with documents and applications stored primarily ‘in the cloud’. The tourism sites will be created using no-cost Google Sites, one of the Google Apps for Education.
Cantillon will rate the tourism websites when completed.
Students are working under the guidance of Dr. Maurisa Pruett, district technology integration specialist and assessment coordinator.
