The Big V Ranch

The Pioneer Woman Museum in Ponca City will host a free lecture from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, on the History of the Big V Ranch.

Rex Ackerson will present the lecture and all are welcome to attend.

The Big V Ranch was founded by William and Viola Vanselous around 1900. Located southwest of Ponca City, the ranch not only became one of the great farming operations in early Oklahoma Territory, but also became nationally famous for breaking and selling quality mules. The ranch had its own commissary, three barns, a large garden, and one of the outstanding early-day homes.

The Big V developed a strain of drought-resistant corn and took months to harvest their abundant corn crop. It was truly a magnificent farm-ranch operation.
