Ponca City Police Department Reminds Drivers and Pedestrians of Rules on City Streets

PCPD-
The Ponca City Police Department (PCPD) wants to remind all citizens of the rules governing pedestrians crossing the road, and the responsibilities of the drivers on that road, as well as the responsibilities of pedestrians.
Under Oklahoma State Law, if there is a marked crosswalk, with a signal, ALL pedestrians must wait until the signal is actuated before entering the road to cross. ALL drivers must obey the signal regardless of whether they see pedestrians crossing or not.
If a pedestrian is crossing at a crosswalk that does not have a signal, all drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians. However, pedestrians do have the responsibility to make sure the roadway is safe and approaching drivers have ample room to safely stop.
Finally, if a pedestrian is crossing a road where a crosswalk is not provided, the pedestrian must yield right of way to all vehicles on the roadway.
The importance of these rules is amplified in school zones and around our schools.
The issue of who may be responsible legally is of little consolation to either party when a child or adult is injured or even killed while crossing the road.
Watch out for one another, and never assume the pedestrian saw you coming, or the driver saw you about to cross. If only takes seconds to be safer.
