Ponca City Humane Society adds two community programs

The Ponca City Humane Society is adding two programs in July  that run on the kindness of a community for the community — the Pet Pantry and the “Spay It Forward” program.

The Pet Pantry’s mission is to distribute pet food to families who may need temporary feeding assistance in order to keep pets and their families together in times of hardship. The program ensures that people who love their animal companions don’t have to choose between feeding their pets and feeding themselves.

This service provided by the Humane Society is made possible through generous contributions of local community members and businesses. This program will allow pet owners who are residents of Kay County or western Osage County, who are having a financial hardship and meet income guidelines, to receive short-term help for their pet.

Participants will be asked to complete an enrollment form. After they are enrolled, they can come to the Humane Society on Wednesdays or the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon, to pick up pet food, when available.

The Humane Society will be holding ongoing fundraisers and events to educate the community to the growing epidemic of hungry pets.

Northern Oklahoma, along with the entire United States, has a severe pet overpopulation problem that results in millions of healthy animals being euthanized for lack of homes.

There is a solution to this tragedy in which everyone can participate. By spaying or neutering companion animals,  these unwanted births and the needless suffering that homeless animals endure can be reduced.

The mission at Ponca City Humane Society is to rescue animals in crisis and this includes preventing crises beforehand.

“Spay It Forward” focuses on combatting pet overpopulation in Kay County and western Osage County through donations. This is a voucher program, working with area veterinarians to fix pets whose owners otherwise couldn’t afford to spay or neuter their companion animals. It allows qualifying individuals to get their pet spayed/neutered at a reduced cost or even free.

Just like the Pet Pantry, the “Spay it Forward” program relies solely on the generosity of individuals in the community. Without this support, the Humane Society cannot help pet owners in need.

For those residents trying to provide for feral cats, vouchers are also available!

Pet owners, who may qualify for aid, can come to the Ponca City Humane Society to meet with a staff member each Wednesday of the month, to inquire and enroll in the “Spay it Forward Program.”
