Police Say Truck Driver Rescued Toddler Found Wandering Streets in Wynnewood

KOKH - June 9, 2023 6:29 am

A trucker finds a little boy wandering the streets in Wynnewood and police say he helped save the toddler’s life.

The toddler is okay and police say the mother isn’t facing any charges.

Robert Delaplain was on his regular route when it quickly took a turn.

“It almost felt unreal,” Delaplain said. “I turn the corner and there is this child in the road. It scared me.”

Delaplain says his dad instincts kicked in and he knew he needed to help the little boy.

“I immediately stopped and hit my flashers,” Delaplain said. “It just kicked in. I am a parent and always watching my kids.”

Delaplain waited with the toddler until Wynnewood police got there.

“He was wearing a diaper, a t-shirt, no shoes,” Delaplain said. “I guess he was just going for an adventure or a walk.”

Police say the boy escaped by crawling up on a toy and opening the front door.

He walked about six blocks through weeds, over the train tracks, and across a busy street.

Assistant police chief Larry Gilleland says he is thankful Delaplain stepped in.

Delaplain breathing a sign of relief also because police returned the little boy to his family.

Police say the little boy hasn’t left home before.

Delaplain says he and the boy’s mom talked and bonded about the ups and downs of parenthood.
