Po-Hi Band Earns Spots in Red Carpet High School Honor Band

Team Radio Marketing Group - November 24, 2016 12:17 pm

Twenty three Ponca City High School Band members recently earned spots in the Red Carpet High School Honor Band, based upon competitive tryouts that were held at Chisholm High School. This Honor Band comprises students from 31 high schools from northwest Oklahoma.

The band is under the direction of David Christy, Head Band Director, Andrew Orr, Keith Crocker and Chad Keilman, Assistant Band Directors,

“I am very proud of all the students who prepared and auditioned,” Christy said.  “This individual preparation makes them better players, which in turn makes the band better.  I am fairly certain this is the largest number of high school students from Ponca City that has ever made a regional honor band.”

This 100 piece honor band is made up of students from grades 10-12.  Ponca City, with 23 students, will have the largest representation in this band.  In addition to those 23 students, Caleb Murray on euphonium, Landon Linder on snare drum, and Dereck Jernigan on mallets earned alternate positions.

Enid High School had 14 students earn positions in the group followed by Woodward and Perry with seven apiece.  The remaining schools that will have representation in the band include Okeene, Blackwell, Crescent, Fairview, Buffalo, Newkirk, Oklahoma Bible Academy, Chisholm, Waukomis, Cherokee, Alva, Medford, Mooreland, Laverne, Pond Creek-Hunter, Ringwood, Tonkawa, Waynoka, Pioneer-Pleasant Vale, Cimarron, Hennessey, Garber, Fargo, Kremlin-Hilldale, Seiling, Morrison, and Watonga.

The band will rehearse and perform on the campus of Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Jan. 13 and 14.

Ponca City also had 33 additional students earn positions in the junior high honor bands, which comprises grades 7-9.  There is an “A” Band and a “B” band.  Those students are listed below. In addition to the 33 students listed, six students earned spots as alternates.  They include Joslyn Davis, flute; Breanna Rhea, euphonium; Dominick Yowell, tuba; Hayden Jones, tuba; Cannon Johnson, snare drum; and Katie Fields, mallets.

More than 30 schools auditioned for the junior high honor bands.  With 34 students, Ponca City had the largest number earn positions in the bands, followed by Enid with 31.

Christy expressed appreciation to Keith Crocker and Andrew Orr for doing an outstanding job preparing the middle school students for this audition.

“To have so many students make these honor bands speaks volumes for the depth of our program,” Christy said. “I am particularly impressed with the 7th graders who made it, as they have to compete against 8th and 9th graders to earn positions in the band.”
