Phillips 66 Celebrates Read Across America Week in Several Ways

Instilling a love for literacy through Dr. Seuss’ birthday!

PONCA CITY –

To celebrate Read Across America Week, the Ponca City Refinery partnered with multiple organizations to help encourage and instill a love for reading. Read Across America Week celebrates the birthday of author Dr. Seuss, one of the most beloved and well-known children’s authors of all time.

“Literacy and education equity are core values of Phillips 66 and foundations to bright futures. We want children to have easy access to books and want to help ensure that children enjoy reading. Reading can stimulate imaginations and help children develop language and listening skills on top of so many other things that can lead to bright futures,” said Erin Liberton, Phillips 66 Field Communications Sr. Advisor.

The Ponca City Refinery partnered with their Partner in Education, Garfield Elementary School, to support the school’s Literacy/Reading Night. The refinery provided pizza for the attendees and donated gas cards that were used as drawing prizes.

The Ponca City Refinery’s Native American Network led a site-wide book drive and collected new and gently used books to be donated to the Dearing House. Books were used to fill their community book box. The book box provides books to the community so that there are always books available to exchange, borrow, or share – helping to break down any barrier that may exist.

Volunteers from the refinery also held a special event at the Child Development Center. The refinery purchased red and white Dr. Seuss themed cupcakes for all of the children and staff members and brought along the Cat in the Hat for a special visit. Volunteers and the Cat read books to each of the classrooms.

Read Across America Week is a reading initiative created by the National Education Association (NEA). The NEA aims to encourage reading and educate people about its benefits, especially among children and young adults.
