Personal Injury Collision in Kay County

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported a personal injury collision occurred about 5:21 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 35 southbound at mile marker 209, about 2 miles south of Tonkawa, OK in Kay County.

The patrol said the accident involved a 2003 Ford F-150 driven by Javier Jara-Briones (SIC), 32, of Kansas City, MO. He was transported by Tonkawa EMS to Blackwell Hospital in Blackwell, OK where he was admitted in stable condition with trunk internal injuries.

A passenger in the vehicle, Jayron Hernandez (SIC), 30, also of Kansas City, MO was transported by Tonkawa EMS to Blackwell Hospital then by Blackwell EMS to Wesley Hospital in Wichita, KS, where he was admitted in stable condition with trunk internal and arm injuries.

The Highway Patrol’s report stated that the vehicle was southbound on I-35. The vehicle departed the roadway to the left, overcorrected, and departed roadway right. The vehcile impacted the 209 mile marker sign. The vehicle continued down an embankment and rolled an undetermined amount of times before coming to rest on its wheels. The driver of the vehicle was ejected an unknown distance and the passenger was ejected 53 feet south. Seatbelts were equipped, but not in use. The report notes that the driver had been drinking and his ability was impaired. The cause of the collision is listed as driving under the influence.
