OSBI investigation of Hugo shooting continues

HUGO, OKLA. – The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred April 26 in Hugo, Okla. What follows is today’s update on the investigation:

  • Three children, ages five, four and one, who were injured in the incident have been treated and released from a Tulsa-area hospital.
  • A fourth child, age three, did not sustain any injuries in the incident.
  • William Devaughn Smith, 21 years old, remains in custody in connection with the armed robbery o f a Hugo Pizza Hut on April 11.
  • Since the time of the incident, the OSBI has had agents on the ground collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. OSBI will continue to do so until the investigation is complete.

Next steps: Once the investigation is complete, a report will be written and submitted to the District Attorney’s office for review.

This update is based on an ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as the OSBI interviews witnesses and collects evidence. The OSBI’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional witnesses are interviewed and additional evidence is collected and analyzed.
