OSBI investigating deputy-involved shooting

Ponca City Now - March 15, 2018 10:43 am

Just before midnight Wednesday, the Grady County Sheriff’s Department requested OSBI special agents investigate a shooting involving one of its deputies.

At approximately 11:15 p.m., two Grady County sheriff’s deputies attempted to serve a felony arrest warrant on Demon Jay Burris Reed, 34. Deputies witnessed Reed pull into his driveway at 1423 S. 7th Street. One deputy attempted to make contact with Reed.

Reed then backed out and began driving down an alley on Tennessee between 6th & 7th Streets. The other deputy drove around the area to get where Reed would exit the alley.

As Reed drove toward the deputy, the deputy fired his weapon at the vehicle several times, striking Reed at least once.

Reed was flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where he remains. OSBI special agents are interviewing those at the scene, collecting evidence, and documenting the scene.

Once the investigation is complete, agents will compile a comprehensive written report and deliver it to the district attorney. The district attorney will determine whether the shooting was justified.

The Grady County sheriff has put the deputy who fired his weapon on administrative leave while OSBI agents investigate.
