CHICKASHA, Okla. (AP) – The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says it is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in Chickasha.

The OSBI says the shooting occurred about 2 a.m. Saturday after several Chickasha police officers responded to reports of a domestic disturbance. Officers were told that a man, later identified as 56-year-old Steve Dwayne Vananda, had a gun.

Officers entered the house and announced their presence as they approached a room where the man and a family member were. The OSBI says that as officers entered the room, Vananda grabbed a handgun and exchanged gunfire with an officer.

Vananda was shot and died at the scene. The officer who fired the fatal shot is on routine paid administrative leave. He has not been identified.

The findings of OSBI’s investigation will be presented to prosecutors.
