Ponca City Now - July 3, 2018 11:45 am

Tuesday morning, the Lawton Police Department requested the OSBI investigate an officer-involved shooting.

About 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, the Lawton Police Department responded to a disturbance call at 1410 NW Taylor Avenue, in Lawton. When two officers arrived on scene, a white adult male left an apartment with a knife. The officers attempted to talk to the subject and have him drop the knife, to no avail.

The officers attempted to use less than lethal tools, with no effect. The subject advanced on the officers and cut one of the officers with the knife. Both officers fired on the subject. The subject was pronounced dead on the scene.

The subject’s identity will be released on confirmation of his identity and next of kin notification.

One officer was treated and released for multiple knife wounds. Both police officers were placed on routine administrative leave by Lawton Police Department.

The OSBI will only release the police officers’ names if criminal charges are filed against them. The OSBI will conduct an investigation and submit the reports to the Comanche County District Attorney’s Office for consideration.
