TULSA, Okla. –
The doll was created as part of Mattel’s Barbie brand’s mission to recognize trailblazing women.
On Monday, the Osage Nation will hold a special celebration to recognize Maria Tallchief’s new doll. Dr. Elise Paschen, Maria’s daughter, says Maria was an amazing role model, serving as the first Native American prima ballerina. She also hopes this doll brings joy to young women.
“I feel like this doll is a breakthrough for little girls across the world to be inspired by my mother’s story. Also, this is the second Native American doll and the second prima ballerina doll that Barbie has created,” Dr. Elise Paschen said.

After retiring from ballet, Maria founded the Chicago City Ballet.
Dr. Paschen said she worked closely with Mattel to create the new Barbie doll. For her, it was important to highlight not only her mother’s legacy but also their Osage Nation heritage.
Maria Tallchief’s Osage Nation name is featured on the doll in both English and the tribe’s language.
“I’ve been working with them for a year and a half as her only child. I provided feedback on the initial sketches, the face sculpts, the tone of her skin, the makeup, and the details of her vibrant dress. They also used beautiful photographs of my mother and her history,” Dr. Paschen said.
The celebration begins at 10 a.m. at the Constantine Theater in Pawhuska and is open to the public. Both Dr. Paschen and Osage Nation Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear will speak, and there will be musical performances.
The doll is now available for purchase on Mattel’s website and costs $35.
