OKLAHOMA CITY, (KOKH) — Oklahoma lawmakers reacted this morning to the news of a New Orleans New Year’s Eve attack that took place around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday morning.
A man, identified as a U.S. citizen from Texas, is reported to have intentionally driven a pickup into a crowd of people celebrating the new year on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter. At least 15 people were killed. Reports say a black ISIS flag was flying from the truck and the attack is being investigated as an act of terror.
Sen. Markwayne Mullins posted the following statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter):
Christie and I are praying for New Orleans as they cope with last night’s horrific act of violence. We’re grateful to the local, state, and national law enforcement who are investigating and sacrificing time away from their families. God bless our friends in Louisiana.
Here is the statement that Sen. James Lankford posted on X:
Cindy and I are praying for the families of those who lost their lives and were injured very early this morning in New Orleans. We are thankful for the swift response from law enforcement and are praying for the two police officers who were injured. This incident is being investigated as a terrorist attack and is a reminder that we have to stay vigilant. As we step into 2025, let us pray for peace, security, and strength for our nation.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond posted the following statement on X:
Last night’s deadly attack in New Orleans is a horrifying and stark reminder that public safety can never be compromised. My heart goes out to all who have been impacted by this tragedy.
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) also published an official statement about postponing the Sugar Bowl on X early on Wednesday:
The decision to postpone tonight’s Sugar Bowl was made in the best interest of public safety.
Lives were tragically lost last night and we are appreciative that public officials and law enforcement agencies continue to work with great diligence to ensure the safety of the New Orleans community.
