They said McCain is the School Resource Officer at Oklahoma Christian School in Edmond, where the accident occurred Friday night.

While in his patrol car, investigators said McCain was rounding a curve, leaving the school when he collided into the gate.

Part of it punctured the vehicle’s windshield, critically injuring McCain after hitting him in the neck and shoulder.

Good Samaritans rushed to his aid.

“There happened to be an officer that was here also, and rushed over to help care for him, and there were several people watching a basketball game that also stepped in,” Deputy Aaron Brilbeck with OCSO said.

The school opened its auditorium for a public prayer on Saturday.

According to investigators, the cause of the crash is under investigation.
