Obituary for Zoe Burge

Zoe Marie Burge passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at the McLoud Nursing Center, McLoud, OK and was assisted by Angelic Hospice of Shawnee, OK. She was 89.

The service will be held on Saturday, September 20, at 2:00 pm at Community Christian Church, 2109 W. Grand Ave, Ponca City, OK. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematory.

Zoe was born in Shidler, OK, January 15, 1925, to Hazel (Lizar) and Orvel Brubaker. She attended Blackburn School in Blackburn, OK, where she graduated in 1944. She married Milton Burge July 2, 1945, and they had two children: Linda Philips of Midwest City, Ok, and Keith Burge of Ponca City, OK.

Zoe was a long-time resident of Ponca City where she attended Community Christian Church for more than 60 years. She loved her church and held many positions such as church custodian, deacon, and was active in many committees.

Zoe worked at Jefferson Elementary School in Ponca City along side her husband, Milton, until they both retired in 1992. She is often remembered for helping Jefferson students in their times of need.

In her free time, she loved to needle point, sew, and make quilts. She entered several of her crafts in the Kay County Fair and usually won a blue ribbon.

She was actively involved in the Ponca City community as the church representative to the Child Development Center, Cub Scout den mother, a frequent deliverer for Meals-on-Wheels, and an active member of the Pioneer Quilting club.

Zoe is survived by her sister, Carole Brown of Tulsa and brother Darrel Brubaker and his wife Mary of Lawrence, KS. She is also survived by her daughter Linda and her husband Donald Phillips, and her son, Keith Burge.

She has five grandchildren- Dawn Johnson of Midwest City, OK, and husband Greg; Brian Phillips of Del City, OK, and wife Lisa; Tracy Burge of Colorado Springs, CO, and wife Brenda; Angela Nibarger of Wakita, OK, and husband Eric; and Terry Burge of Ponca City.

She has nine living great-grandchildren: Crystal Witmer and husband Jason of Midwest City; Matthew Johnson of Midwest City; Rachel and Joshua Phillips of Del City; Zachary, Daniel, and Spencer Burge of Colorado Springs; Cody and Kaylee Nibarger of Wakita.

Zoe was preceded in death by her mother and father, sister Patti, her husband, a brother-in-law Billie Brown, a daughter-in-law Glenda Burge, and one great-grandson, Scott Johnson.
