Velma J. Fox Mitchell
December 18, 1931 – February 20, 2020
Velma Jean Fox Mitchell, 88, formerly of Blackwell, OK passed from this earth on Feb. 20, 2020 in Winfield, KS.
Velma was born on December 18, 1931 to Emmett and Grace Wilkins in Brandon, CO. On her first birthday, she moved with her parents and sister back to their home town of Blackwell, OK, where she grew up and graduated from Blackwell High School. She met Sam Fox of Deer Creek, and they married in 1951. The couple moved to the Fox homestead north of Deer Creek and raised wheat, cattle, hay, and four children, Sherry, Donna, Mike, and Karen. Sam became disabled, and Velma cared for him for 23 years while raising their children on the farm. They were married for 40 years. After Sam’s death, Velma reconnected with an old friend, Gerald Mitchell and they married in 1993. In their 24 years together, Gerald and Velma took many road trips in their motor home, including to Alaska. They spent their winters in Port Aransas, TX where Velma would bring along her knitting or embroidery machine and work on her many projects. Over the years, she made over 300 sweaters and countless embroidery projects, giving most of it away to family and friends.
Velma was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and had a strong faith which she shared with many people. She will be missed greatly by her family and her many friends in the church.
Velma is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Betty and Beverly; husband, Sam; and husband Gerald.
She is lovingly remembered by her children, Sherry Pulis and J.P of Willis, TX; Donna Haverstock and Larry of Lake Tapps, WA; Mike Fox and Julie of Winfield, KS; Karen Cupp and Rick of Kenai, AK.
