Steve Alvin Johnston, 75, former resident of Ponca City, passed away peacefully, June 26, 2019, in Tonkawa, Okla, surrounded by his three daughters.
Memorial Service will be held 2 PM, Wednesday, July 3, 2019, in the Trout Funeral Home Chapel.
He was born on May 24, 1944, to Francis Marion Johnston and Ina Lawanda (Lamb) Johnston Griffin in Shidler, Okla. The family moved to Kansas and Steve graduated from Goddard High School, class of 1962, where he was a great athlete, active in football and track. Following graduation, Steve completed basic training in Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He served in the United States National Guard from 1963-1969.
General aviation was Steve’s favorite hobby. He was an avid pilot with instrument and multi-engine ratings. The Piper Cherokee 6 and Cessna 310, were the favorites of his aircrafts. He was a skilled carpenter, owning Steve Johnston Construction in Ponca City for over 20 years and built many residential and commercial buildings in the area. He also lived in Arkansas and Mississippi, where he was a over the road truck driver. Later he returned to Oklahoma to be near his family. Steve was an enthusiastic fan of Oklahoma State University sports and thoroughly enjoyed attending Cowboy events with family and friends.
He was survived by his three daughters, Deanna Cummings and husband David of Ponca City, Okla., LaCinda (Lucy) Stansbury and husband Mark of Lorraine, Kan., Stephane Hampton and husband Brandon of Tonkawa, Okla.; parents, Francis Johnston of Bartlesville, Okla. and Lawanda (Lu) Griffin and husband Frank of Helena, Ark.; siblings, Cindy Hodsdon and husband Geoff of Hot Springs Village, Ark., Debbie Lewis and husband Kyle of Weston, Fl., Michael Johnston and wife Mandy of Bartlesville, Okla., Suann Palmer and husband, David of Kaw City, Okla.; grandchildren, Makenzie Cummings; Anna, Carter, Courtney and Ella Stansbury; Braydon, Rylee and Kamryn Hampton.
