Ruby Juanita Shaw

October 1, 1928 – June 11, 2018

Ruby Juanita Shaw left this earth to be with our Lord on Monday, June 11, 2018 at the age of 89. A funeral ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Ponca City, Oklahoma with the Reverend Dr. Baker officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at a family visitation on Friday, June 15, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Trout Funeral Home in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

Ruby was born the oldest of five children to Jasper Newton and Thelma Maude Stracener on October 1, 1928 in England, Arkansas. She grew up around Lonoke and England, Arkansas where she received her education.

Ruby met the love of her life, James D. Shaw in 1942 at the age of 14 and married on June 27, 1946 and made their first home in England, Arkansas. While Mr. Shaw worked for the railroad, they lived in California and Nevada. Later, in 1954, they moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma where they resided until she moved in 2013 to be closer to her children. At the time of her death she was living with her daughter Cassandra and her husband Terry. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. After her first grandchild, Amy, her name became “Nanny” which is what she was called by all the rest of her grandchildren. She loved spending her time with her family who loved her dearly.

Ruby worked for Montgomery Ward as boys clothing manager for 16 years, then for J.C. Penney for 8 years as fashion manager of ladies ready to wear. She retired in 1985 at the age of 57. Ruby and her husband bought a place in Colorado where they spent most of their summers until Jim’s illness in 2000 prevented him from returning. She enjoyed fishing with her husband and driving in the mountains for many years.

Mrs. Shaw loved her church and was an active member of Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Ponca City. Through the years she held the offices of Sunday School Secretary, Church Secretary and various teaching positions and loved working with the children during Vacation Bible School. She also held the office of Secretary and Treasury of the Ladies Auxiliary where she made many dear friends.

Her hobbies through the years included bowling, gardening, playing cards and attending many baseball, softball and soccer games in which her grandchildren played. She was also known by many of her grandchildren’s friends as “Nanny”.

She is survived by two sons, Danny and wife Judie of Broken Arrow and Joey and wife Patti of Edmond; two daughters, Sheila and husband Tom Montgomery of Dewey and Cassandra and husband Terry Sutherland of Richmond, Texas; twelve grandchildren, Amy and husband Joe LaSpisa of Bartlesville, Shari Baker of Claremore , Micky and wife Cindy Montgomery of Keller, Texas, Kim and husband Steve Bailey of Montgomery, Texas, Daniel and wife Tammy Shaw of Tulsa, Cortni and husband Clayton Miller of Spring, Texas, Joey and wife Lynna Rogers of Flint, Texas, Dan Sutherland and Uriah Sutherland of Ponca City, Jeremiah and wife Whitney Shaw of Edmond, Josiah Shaw of Denver, Colorado, and Joseph and Sara Shaw of Huntington Beach, California; twenty great-grandchildren, Chase, Kate, Jake LaSpisa, Brannon and wife KaSandra Adkins, Taber and Kenlie Adkins, Addison Baker, Jacob and Rebecca Montgomery, Lauren Sutherland, Cayden Diebold, Cayleigh Miller, Hannah and Lily Rogers, Madison, Abby, and Reagan Shaw, Connor Bailey, and Huntley, Walker, and Tenley Shaw and one great great grandchild, Oaklee Annabel Adkins, sister, Wanda Whiting, sister in law, Margie Bequin and husband Jim and many nephews, nieces and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim Shaw in 2004, her parents, Jasper and Thelma Stracener, two dear brothers, J.C. and Tommy Stracener, her infant sister, Carol June Stracener, and one great-granchild, Cooper Miller.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Daniel Shaw, Joey Rogers, Jeremiah Shaw, Josiah Shaw, Joseph Shaw, Micky Montgomery, Daniel Sutherland, Uriah Sutherland, Joe LaSpisa, Steve Bailey, and Clayton Miller.

Honorary Pallbearers will be her granddaughters: Amy LaSpisa, Kim Bailey, Shari Baker, Cortni Miller, Tammy Shaw, Lynna Rogers, Whitney Shaw, Cindy Montgomery and Sara Shaw.
