Melvin Edgar Powell, II
April 2, 1937 – February 13, 2019
Melvin was born April 2, 1937 in Oakland, California the oldest son of Melvin Edgar Powell and Sophia (Lonski) Powell. He attended Castlemont High School in Oakland California. In 1955 he joined The United States Air Force and in 1957 while stationed at Tinker Air Force Base he met the love of his life Priscilla Jordan. They were married at Osage Heights Baptist Church on June 1st 1958. They made their first home in Midwest City. While serving his country in the Air Force he was stationed in Oklahoma, California and Texas plus many countries overseas Germany, Spain, North Africa, Iceland to name a few. He also served in the Vietnam War. He retired from the Airforce in 1975 after 20 years as an E-6 Tech Sargent. He had a lot of flying time in many different aircrafts over the 20-year span and had a few stories to go along with them. He told a story about being in a crash landing of a plane in California once while an episode of the hit TV show Lassie was being filmed and the motion picture crew wasn’t very happy. After retirement the family moved back to Ponca City in 1975. He worked as a house painter, and a garage door installer for a short time before hiring on at Titus. He left there for a career with Conoco in 1978. He worked there as a repairman for the next 17 years and retired from there on an early out program in 1995. He enrolled at Pioneer Area Vo-tech school in the auto mechanics class. After graduation he worked a short time for Boomer Tire. He was a member of the Classic Cars of Ponca City, American Legion Huff-Minor Post 14, VFW, NRA and help get the McCord Volunteer Fire Dept. started. His Hobbies included camping with his family, fishing, hunting and restoring and showing old cars with his two sons and fellow car club members. He loved going to car shows and an airshow now and then and loved seeing the old cars and planes from his past. He spent time as a scout leader and also a 4H leader with his children. He was a baseball coach and loved watching his kids and grandkids play sports.
He is survived by his wife Priscilla of 60 years, daughter Trudy and husband Jeff, son Melvin and wife Montra, and son Randy and wife Denise, all of Ponca City. Grandkids Jeff Breedlove Jr. of Ponca City, Aaron and Marissa Hoak and future great grandson, of Oklahoma City and Marcus Powell of Edmond. He is proceeded in death by his parents, brothers Fred, Ray, Lee, and Ed all of California. Twin grandsons Marlin and Mason of Ponca City.
His services will be held Tuesday, February 19th at 2 p.m. at Osage Heights Baptist Church 142 Tapp Rd, Ponca City, Oklahoma Donations in Mel’s memory may be made to Osage Heights Baptist Church or Hospice of North Central Oklahoma. Special thanks to all the caregivers who took care of Mel over the years. Visitation will be Monday evening at Grace Memorial Chapel with the Family in Attendance for friends and relatives from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
