Mary Ann Sneed

March 22, 1948 – November 13, 2024

Mary Ann Sneed, age 76, of Perry, Oklahoma passed away on November 13, 2024 at Green Valley Nursing Home, in Perry, Oklahoma.

A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, November 20,2024 at 10 AM at Trout Funeral Home of Perry with Brian Friend officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home of Perry, 1408 N 7th St, Perry, OK 73077.

Mary was born on March 22, 1948, in Ponca City, Oklahoma to E.C. and Lillie (Delaney) Underwood. Mary graduated from Ponca City High School in 1966 and attended Oklahoma State University before marrying Darrell James Sneed in 1968. Mary and Darrell settled in Perry, Oklahoma shortly after their second daughter, Darra was born where Darrell worked at Charles Machine Works until his retirement. Mary worked many years as a nurse’s aide and later a nurse at both local nursing homes until she retired.

Mary enjoyed reading books, working in her flower garden and taking care of her Tamagotchi electronic pets, in which she had several. Mary loved sitting on the porch watching the birds, especially when the hummingbirds came through. Mary’s friends and family will tell you she had a great sense of humor and could make anyone laugh by just talking to them. She had a cackle that was contagious.

Earlier in life Mary collected clocks, all sorts of clocks. Anniversary clocks were her favorite to collect, and she had many of them and that is so fitting because Mary and Darrell had just celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on November 12th the day before she passed away.

After retiring from nursing, she began helping her daughter with childcare for her grandsons Nathaniel and Jacob until they were old enough to go to school. Then Jody recruited her back to Green Valley as the ward clerk part time even after she started dialysis just to get her out of the house because she was reading 5 to 6 books a week and it was hard to keep her in reading material. Anyone who knew Mary at the nursing home knew she loved her dogs Nellie and Annie! So much so that she would collect scraps from the nursing home for them and soon it was habit for everyone there to collect them, but Mary’s favorite thing to do was to sit down and assist the residents in the dining room with their meals at lunchtime. She just enjoyed helping people.

Mary enjoyed her grandsons Nathaniel and Jacob very much and supported them in anything that they did. She attended school and sporting events anytime she could. She loved to laugh and play with them and be silly. Mary was a great cook and was the C.E.O of stuffing at Christmas and Thanksgiving, her family attests. She made the best stuffing they all agreed on.

Later on, Darra had Mary’s first granddaughter, Kay Ann, and she was thrilled to finally have a granddaughter in the family. Kay and Grandma Mary loved to sit out on the porch and blow bubbles and name all the birds they saw. Kay would always play in the dirt and Grandma Mary would just laugh and tell her she reminded her of “dirty Anna” a term Darra, her mother had when she was a little girl playing in the dirt.

Mary’s last years were especially tough with the medical problems she had, but she faced them everyday head on and never wavered about wanting to be here with her family. She was a pillar of strength for her family and taught them to be strong and never give up. She will be forever missed and always remembered.

Special thanks to the wonderful teams at Fresenius Dialysis clinic, Perry Green Valley Nursing Home and Companion Hospice.

Survivors include: her husband, Darrell Sneed of Perry; daughter, Jody Sim and her husband, Craig of Perry; daughter, Darra Mitchell and her husband, Mark of Perry; and grandchildren, Nathaniel Sim of Stillwater, Jacob Sim and Kay Ann, of Perry.
