Mary Catharine Detten was born to Michael A. Schiltz and Christine Laurent Schiltz in Ponca City, OK, on November 9, 1936, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Mary Catharine attended Round Grove Rural School and St. Mary’s Catholic High School. She was raised along with her two brothers, James and Dick Schiltz on their family farm west of Ponca City. During her school years, she was involved with the farm and 4-H. She loved performing with her father, who played the violin, and other musicians at community and church events, where she played the piano, accordion, and used her beautiful voice. Special awards during her high school and college years were National 4-H Winner in Recreation and Rural Arts, National Farmers Union Jr. Advisory Board, and National Board of Rural USA. Mary Catharine received her Associates Degree from Northern Oklahoma College in 1956 and then attended one year of schooling at Oklahoma State University.
In her adult years, she was active in 4-H at local, County, District, State and National levels; Farmer’s Union; County Election Board; St. Jude’s/St. Frances Women’s groups at St. Mary’s Catholic Church; Kay County Extension Homemakers; Pioneer Area Quilters guild; and Manager of Round Grove Community Center. As a homemaker, Mary Catharine always had wonderful meals on the table to serve family, friends, hired hands, and acquaintances. She created beautiful clothing for daughters for many special events. She supported each of her children with her talents and organization. She also regularly drove the tractors and trucks while being the chief cook for harvest meals. Mary Catharine greatly enjoyed traveling with her husband, Dick, for Farmland Board of Director functions. Meeting, greeting, smiling, and making people feel comfortable were beautiful traits of Mary Catharine.
In the summer of 1952, Mary Catharine met Richard (Dick) Lloyd Detten from Amarillo, TX at a Farmer’s Union All State Camp, in Colorado. For several years, they wrote letters and visited in each other’s homes from time to time. On August 10, 1957, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dick and Mary Catharine were married. The result of these two people falling in love are five children, eighteen grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren.
