Obituary for Marjorie French
Ponca City Now - September 8, 2014 12:00 am
Marjorie, a resident of the Via Christi Village in Ponca City, Oklahoma, died August 27, 2014.
She was born January 10, 1921, to Robert and Ima Dorsey. She spent her childhood on a farm in Caddo County, Oklahoma where everything the family ate came from the farm.
After high school, she moved to California, where she met her husband Verne LeRoy French. They were married in 1942, before Verne spent World War II as a pharmacist on a Navy hospital ship, caring for Marines in the Pacific. Marjorie worked in an airplane factory during the war.
After the war, they had two children and lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Texarkana, Texas where Marjorie was a homemaker and became quite good at bowling. In 1963, they moved to Sentinel, Oklahoma and opened a Western Auto hardware store. They owned and operated the business until their retirement in 1982.
During her years in Sentinel, Marjorie was an active volunteer in the Triple-R-Bar Rodeo club, Chamber of Commerce, public library, tennis courts, and the community center. She also served as a municipal judge.
Marjorie was the classic Pioneer woman: fierce, determined, and tireless in her efforts to care for her family and community. She had a real and positive impact on the people around her and the communities in which she lived.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994, and her daughter, Arlita, in 2008.
She is survived by her son, Eric, grandchildren Kimberly Ruble, Ben Post, Travis Post, and Erica French. Her great-grandchildren are Joshua and Christi; Ellie and Jaydeen; Tricia, Kyra, and Kyle; and great-great-grandson Jason.
A small graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday September 9th at noon at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery near Muskogee, Oklahoma. Memorial contributions should be made to charities that benefit Alzheimer’s research or care.
