Margaret Ann Wilkerson

April 23, 1926 – January 21, 2018

Margaret Ann Wilkerson passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at The Renaissance of Ponca City. She was 91 years old. Margaret was born on April 23, 1926 in Ponca City to her parents, Walter and Myrtle Barrick. She graduated from Ponca City High School. Margaret married Francis Eugene Wilkerson on March 30, 1946 in Ponca City.

One of Margaret’s first jobs as a young girl was running the elevator in the Security Bank building in downtown Ponca City. It was a job she said she loved to do because she enjoyed meeting the people who used it. She said she would also sometimes sing to them as she ran them from floor to floor. Later, she was an AT&T operator, which she continued to do for a while after she and Francis were married.

She and her husband, Francis, were members of Northeast Baptist Church for over 35 years, where both became very involved. One thing they enjoyed doing together was to be part of the nursing home ministry. She would always share how hard it was to see some of the residents and how lonely they were, but knew the importance of going because their visit, for some, was the only visit they got.

Margaret’s positive and giving personality was infectious to all she was around. She made friends easily and treated everyone as if they were special. In her ability to be creative and crafty, she could wrap a gift so beautifully the recipient didn’t want to open it. In her later years, Margaret wrote poetry. She said that her Lord and Savior would put a poem in her heart any time of the day and she would stop right then and write it down. She wrote many poems, until it became too hard for her to see to write. Margaret will be missed by so many because she was loved by so many.

Margaret is survived by her grandson, Brandon Wilkerson of South Texas, his wife Katie, their three children, and many close friends too numerous to name.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Francis, and her son, E.J. Wilkerson.

A funeral ceremony for Margaret will be held at 10 am Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Northeast Baptist Church in Ponca City with Dr. Larry Nigh presiding. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be: Charlie Blew, Julian Ford, Jim Wilkinson, Stan Hinshaw, David Womble, and Billy Arnold. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Gene Tarr and Jerrell Evans.

Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory in Ponca City.
