Obituary for Loyd Bishop

Loyd Morgan Bishop

March 8, 1938 – April 1, 2019

Loyd M. Bishop passed from being into nothingness on April 1, 2019 at the age of 81. Loyd was born at Ponca City, Oklahoma on March 9, 1938, to E. Glen and Christine “Padgett” Bishop.

The family moved to the Panhandle of Oklahoma where Loyd attended school at Beaver, finishing the eleventh grade. Then the family moved to Guthrie where Loyd graduated with the Class of 1956. He attended Oklahoma State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre. At OSU he was a member of Delta Chi Social Fraternity. In addition to his work with theatrical productions, he was also a member of the OSU Marching Band, Concert band, and Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity.

Loyd enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War era and was honorably discharged from the service with the rank of Communications Technician Second Class. While in the Navy, he was stationed at Pensacola, Florida, Guam, and Washington D.C.

After his Navy service, Loyd returned to OSU where he earned a Master of Arts Degree in Theatre, following which he held teaching positions at Oklahoma State, University of New Mexico, and the University of Albuquerque. In addition to working in theatres in New Mexico and Texas, Loyd also worked with Ponca Playhouse. He directed shows and performed in many productions. He designed sets even while serving in the Navy. His favorite set designs were for Playhouse productions of “The Hasty Heart” and “The Royal Hunt of the Sun”.

Returning to Ponca City in 1988, he became interested in genealogy and became genealogy librarian at the Ponca City Library from which he retired in early 2008. Since that time he has worked to finish the genealogical research on his family.

In lieu of contributions to charities that spend most of the money from these contributions on salaries to employees, and not on the research they claim to represent; please send flowers, not to me, nor to my family, instead send them to someone you love very much but have taken for granted for too long a time. Remember flower shops deserve to make a living as much as charities do.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Glen and Christine Bishop; his brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Juanita Bishop, and his long-time theatrical production partner, Jo Ann Muchmore. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Sandy Bishop of Ponca City.

The body will not lie in state nor will there be a visitation nor funeral services. Burial is to be at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in Winfield, KS.
