Lois Irene Kahle

June 5, 1925 – March 11, 2022

Lois Irene Simpson was born June 5, 1925 in Wellington, Kansas, the daughter of Howard and Carrie Simpson. She attended school there until she married Elston Kahle at the young age of 17. They resided with Elston’s parents for a few months before moving into their home on the Johnson place, northwest of Newkirk. They lived there from 1943 until they moved into their dream home in 1976. They raised three sons: Dennis, Monty and Curtis. In addition, they shared life with their two nephews, Danny and Ken Harader, as well as many other young people that worked on the farm through the years. They spent 64 years together before Elston passed away in 2007. Lois continued to live in her home, where she enjoyed caring for her roses and hosting her family for holiday gatherings. In 2019, her grandson Eric and his family moved in with her, enabling her to stay in her home as her health began to fail. His wife Dawn became her full-time caregiver, assisted by her sister Bethany. All of Lois’s family continued to come visit her in her home, sharing memories and much love with each other over the years. Lois made the journey into the arms of Jesus on March 11, 2022, joining so many loved ones that had already gone before.

Lois was a critical part of the farm for over 50 years. She handled all the office duties as well as learning to operate machinery, including wheat trucks and tractors. She also delivered greatly anticipated hot meals to the field for dozens of workers over the years. Other activities that Lois enjoyed included sewing (especially for family members) and upholstering furniture, collecting recipes from magazines and the many newspapers she always read, doing repairs on her electrical appliances and phones, and watching Fox News for the latest on all the happenings of the day. She loved to talk with family and friends, sharing her thousands of stories. Her memory was remarkable and was sharp to her last days. Lois loved to hear all kinds of music that her family shared with her…from her sons’ band (the Sting Rays) to the banjo, guitar and piano music from different family members. Always having a sweet tooth, her special treat was a trip through Braum’s to get a yummy chocolate shake for any drive home. Our Grandma Lois will certainly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include sons, Dennis Elston Kahle (Marscha), of Blackwell, Monty Herman Kahle (Nancy) of Newkirk, Curtis Ray Kahle (Candace) of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bonnie Wheeldon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elston Kahle; and brothers, Raymond Simpson, Floyd Simpson, Forrest Simpson, Cecil Simpson and Carol “Bub” Simpson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, in the chapel at Roberts and Son Funeral Home with Pastor Martin Younger officiating. Burial will follow in Newkirk Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Eric Kahle, Heath Lambert, Ross Kelly, John Hafele, Keith Haugan and Keith Kennedy.
