Lloyd Lansdowne
September 15, 1942 – January 14, 2021
Lloyd Elwyn Lansdowne, age 78, of Ponca City, OK passed away January 14, 2021 at Mercy Hospital, in Springfield, Missouri due to complications of COVID-19. Care is under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematory.
Lloyd was born September 15, 1942 in Ponca City, OK to Lawrence and Hazel (Wright) Lansdowne. He grew up in Tonkawa, OK, graduating from Tonkawa High School in 1960. He lettered in football all four years of high school and earned the nickname “lightning.” He married the girl who lived across the street, Phyllis Mourer, at the First Presbyterian Church of Tonkawa on June 23, 1962. The couple was blessed with two children, Rhonda and Troy. After briefly living in Tonkawa and Lake City, FL, the family moved to Alva, OK. While living in Alva, Lloyd put himself through school by working at Safeway and earned a business degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. At one point, he also served in the Oklahoma National Guard in a howitzer division. The family then moved to Ponca City, where Lloyd began his thirty-three-year career at Conoco, retiring as a field auditor. This included a six-year move to Midland, TX in the 1990s.
In his younger years, Lloyd liked dirt-biking and playing softball. An avid golfer, he earned three holes-in-one at Lew Wentz and was fortunate enough to golf at several courses across the U.S. He was a devoted OU Sooner fan in all sports, especially football. He also enjoyed his Friday night domino group. Keeping in contact with classmates, especially the class of 1960, was very important to him. Reading westerns was also one of his favorite pastimes. Lloyd was known for his quick wit and dry humor, being famous for his many “Lloydisms.” In later life, Lloyd worked as a security guard at a wind turbine farm, delivered and picked up vehicles for Cannon Honda, and, right before his passing, had a small, nighttime delivery route for the Ponca City News. Lloyd was always a hard worker and a great provider for his family. He will be forever loved and missed.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis, daughter Rhonda Lansdowne, son Troy Lansdowne and wife Robin, grandson Eric Lansdowne-Peeples, brother Lynn Lansdowne and wife Dianna, sister Leola “Leigh” Hunter and husband Michael, brother-in-law Ron Mourer and wife Nancy, niece Jennifer McCoy and husband Steven, nephew Jeff Wilson and wife Tami, nephew Travis Lansdowne, nieces Gayle Vance, Lea Blenz, and Julie Mazurier, nephew Darrin Mourer and wife Alicia, niece Marissa Mourer Paxton and husband Laramie, several great nieces and nephews, many cousins, and extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Ezra and Irene Lansdown and Roy and Rose Wright, his father and mother-in-law DJ and Melba Mourer, one very special aunt, Kathryn Wright, “Aunt Kate,” who became a second mother to him after he lost his own mother in his early twenties, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a niece.
There will be no public service at this time, but a memorial will be held at a later date. We invite you to come and sign his book of condolence at Trout Funeral Home and Crematory on Thursday, January 21st or Friday, January 22nd.
