Leo Haynes

June 12, 1944 – December 17, 2021

Leo Vernon Haynes, 77, of Ponca City, OK, left his life on December 17, 2021. A Funeral Ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, December 30, 2021, at the Trout Funeral Home Chapel, with Thomas C. Webb officiating. Face masks are required. Burial will immediately follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery. Leo was the 11th of 12 children, born to the late Willie and Olene Haynes. Leo attended Attucks Elementary, East Junior High and graduated from Ponca City High School. After graduation, Leo moved to Pemberton, NJ to live with his brother James and his wife Rosa. He began his work career at the McGuire Air Force Base Terminal. In March 1963, Leo married his wife Catherine, and they became the parents of 3 girls who were the joy of his life. Leo returned to Ponca City and was hired by Conoco Oil Company. Soon after his employment, he was drafted into the US Army and after basic training, was stationed in Germany. On his return to the United States, Leo was discharged and resumed employment at Conoco Oil Company. Leo became a Chemical Research Technician at Conoco and together with Ken Smith and Debora Massuodo, developed and received certificates for four patents in the United States Patent and Trademark Office and one certificate in the International Patent for the country of Norway. He retired from Conoco after 40 years of employment.

Leo was a member of Conner Chapel AME Church and served as a Steward until his health failed. He was very active with the Attucks Community Committee and assisted with many programs in the community. Leo was a 33rd Degree Mason, Prince Hall Affiliate, and a very active member of the C.D. Dewberry Masonic Lodge.

Leo was a kind and gentle person who took care of his mother until her death. He could be found every day at noon, joining her for lunch and watching the soap operas with her. His brothers and sisters could never thank him enough for all that he did for their mother.
Leo departed this life after many years of illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Joanna Morris and Juanita Blackwell; 4 brothers, James, Elza, William and Mark Haynes and granddaughter Mylia Bey. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, Catherine of the home; his 3 daughters, Jymme Lawyer, Pamela (Earnest) Alexander and Racheal Haynes all of Ponca City; his grandsons, Brandon Haynes, Adrian Lawyer, Nicholas Haynes and Hassan Bey; granddaughters, Ebone’ Dennis and Ana-Lia Bey and, great-grandchildren, Kyrin Haynes and Imani Jones.

He is also survived by 2 sisters, Amy (Virgil) Griffin, of San Marcos, California, Barbara Rosser, Dayton, Ohio; 3 brothers, Judge Theodore (Andrea) Haynes, Orlando, Florida, Charlie (Helen) Haynes, Oklahoma City and Earnest (Kim) Haynes, Columbia, South Carolina; sisters-in-law, Rosa Haynes, Camden, South Carolina, Earlene Williams, Manhattan, New York and Maxine Smith, Hampton Virginia, Dolley (Winston) Rolland, Ponca City, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
