Obituary for Layle Steel

Layle W. Steele passed away Wednesday afternoon November 19, 2014 after living a long and illness free life. He was 87. A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematory in Ponca City.
Layle was born in 1927 to Elmer and Clara Steele in Newkirk, OK. In 1928, just a year after his birth the family moved to Blackwell, OK and lived there 10 years before moving on to Nardin, OK. Those first 11 years were spent growing up with his older sister Marybelle and older brother Norman. It was a close loving Christian family that practiced the Golden Rule and always trusted in God.
In 1945, before graduating from high school and at the young age of 17, Layle enlisted in the US Navy. He served four years before returning home to Blackwell to finish his last year of high school.
Layle married Norma Jean O’Mealey on April 21, 1950, at First Christian Church in Ponca City. The couple made their home in Blackwell from 1950 to 1972 before moving to St. Louis. After retiring in 1985, Layle and Norma moved back to Ponca City in 1986. In 2007 Norma Jean Passed away due to pneumonia brought on by a fall that caused a broken hip and arm. In 2012, Layle’s youngest son Scott died in a hospital in St. Louis due to complications after gallbladder surgery, he was 47. Layle is survived by his oldest son Richard of 54 years. He is also survived by an older sister, Mary Elliott of Saint Johns, FL; and an older brother Norman Steele of Kansas City.
Layle was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Clara Steele, wife and son Scott.
