Kimberly Sue Corbin

October 14, 1956 – June 14, 2024

Kimberly (Kim) Sue Corbin, a long-time resident of Ponca City, Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2024, surrounded by her family. Kimberly Poindexter was born to Donald and Bonnie Poindexter on October 14, 1956, in Landstuhl, Germany. In May 1974, she graduated from Southeast High School in Wichita, Kansas. Following graduation, she worked for MetLife, where she made many lifelong friends.

She married Gerald (Jerry) Corbin of Wichita, KS, in 1980; on May 17th, 2024, they celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. Kim and Jerry moved to Ponca City in August of 1983, with their two daughters, Jill and Karie, when Jerry began working for Security Bank.

Kim is survived by her husband, Jerry Corbin; daughters Jill Corbin and Karie Corbin, both of Denver, CO; step-son Jay Corbin, his wife Dana, and three step-grandsons; doting dog Koda of 15 years; and granddogs Dash, River, and Wilson; sister Deb (Poindexter) McFarlane of Davis, OK; and brother Donald Poindexter Jr. of Orlando, FL. Kim was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Bonnie (Hamblen) Poindexter, and adoring dogs Kacee and Tinker.

Kim worked for Ponca City Public Schools for 20 years as a teacher’s aide at Woodlands Elementary, the former Kindergarten Center on the Marland Mansion grounds, and Trout Elementary. In 1989, she spearheaded the Ponca City Library fundraising campaign to expand and renovate the existing building. Her commitment resulted in securing $450,000 from area businesses, members of the community, and local foundations.

Kim was known for her unwavering loyalty, competitive spirit, and sense of adventure. She was especially dedicated to her family (her world revolved around her girls), the Oklahoma Sooners, and exploring the globe. Traveling to away games with her family and tailgate crew provided the perfect combination.

While working at Woodlands, she was thrilled to be on the same campus as Jill, Karie, and their friends. She was actively involved in their school activities, volunteering in their classrooms, chaperoning field trips, serving on the PTA, and driving numerous friends home after school each day. Working for the school system enabled Kim to spend ample time with her family during school breaks. Trips to Walt Disney World were the most common, and she relished serving as an unofficial tour guide to family and friends. Her love of Disney, combined with her fierce competitive nature, led her to participate in multiple 5k and half-marathon events, including the Disney Coast to Coast Race Challenge.

A fervent supporter of the Oklahoma Sooners, Kim’s love for her team knew no bounds. She remained their steadfast cheerleader, from thrilling victories, including a national championship, to heart-wrenching defeats. Proudly donning crimson and cream on game day to support her beloved Sooners, Kim was a founding member of their tailgate crew, established in 1979, and will no doubt be missed for seasons to come.

Kim’s love of adventure likely stemmed from her upbringing as an Air Force brat, living in Germany, Japan, Florida, Kansas, Minnesota, and Oklahoma. She also thoroughly enjoyed travel, from simple road trips to the next town to Eureka Springs for craft fairs and throughout Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. She always made the time spent in the car an exciting adventure, often while singing Disney soundtrack songs at the top of her lungs.

Beach vacations were her favorite, and she happily soaked up the sun in Hawaii, throughout Mexico, and 11 islands in the Caribbean. Shoal Bay on the island of Anguilla was by far her happy place. Eventually, her travels took her back to Europe. Her most proud feat was a three-week solo backpacking trip through France, Italy, and Switzerland. Though she traveled the world, some of her fondest memories were from her grandparent’s farm in Pond Creek, OK.

Kim’s life will be celebrated at a later date when family and friends will gather to share stories, laughter, and memories of a loving wife, mother, and friend who lived life to the fullest.

The family has received countless acts of kindness from many community members. They would like to especially thank Jean Bowhay, Anita Norris, Dr. Stephen Ross, his staff, and the compassionate caregivers at Precise Home Health Care, Via Christi, and Humanity Hospice, who all provided comfort to Kim throughout the last year.
