Kenneth Charles Cheney

December 26, 1931 – December 26, 2019

Longtime Perry resident, Kenneth Charles Cheney passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2019 in Guthrie, Oklahoma and celebrated his 88th birthday with his Lord and Savior.

Public visitation will be Sunday, December 29th from 1pm to 8pm with the family receiving friends from 4pm to 6pm. A funeral ceremony to celebrate Kenny’s life will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, December 30, 2019 at the First Christian Church in Perry with Reverend Joshua Bell officiating. Interment will follow in Grace Hill Cemetery, were Kenny will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Mary. Casket bearers will be Al Busch, Dennis Busch, Randy Busch, Rick Adams, Butch Adams and Ed Cheney, Jr. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home of Perry.

Kenneth was born on December 26, 1931 to Louie and Carrie (Bushman) Cheney in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was raised in the Blackwell and Braman area, graduating from Braman High School in 1950. Shortly after high school, he was united in marriage to the love of his life Mary Lou Shurtz on October 15, 1950. They made their home in Dilworth Field, Oklahoma and Morton, Texas before settling in Perry, Oklahoma around 1955. During this time he worked as a pumper in the oil field, which became his life long career. Their young family welcomed a son, Chuck and a daughter, Tammy. In addition to working in the oil field, Kenny was a skilled and licensed taxidermist as well as an expert fisherman. He could be found spending many hours on the water at Perry Lake setting jug lines, bank poles and water skiing with his family. The Oklahoma Outdoors magazine published an article detailing his knowledge of catfishing. Kenny enjoyed catching large catfish, his largest being that of 70lbs. Many pictures can be found with his grandkids laying next to his fish for size comparison. Kenny enjoyed trapping and hunting wildlife. He was an avid collector and enjoyed restoring old guns. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and had a large arsenal of firearms. Kenny enjoyed watching and playing sports, he could often be seen cheering on his grandkids as they participated in various activities. He was one of their biggest fans. Kenny had a strong faith and had been a member of the First Christian Church in Perry. More than anything, Kenny was a family man, he loved and cherished the time he got to spend hunting with his son and grandsons, camping and skiing with his daughter, and driving many hours with his grandchildren waiting for that special opportunity to swerve and honk the horn to scare them to death so he could laugh uncontrollably. Kenny was an incredible husband, dad and grandad. His family will treasure the memories he created for them and will miss him dearly.

Kenny is survived by his adored children: Chuck Cheney and his wife, Kathy of Sadler, TX, Tammy Kelly and her husband, Jim of Perry, OK; four grandchildren: Chad Cheney and his wife, Bobbi Jo of Denton, TX, Robin Goins of Ardmore, OK, Shelynn Kelly of Stillwater, OK, Sheena Capps and her husband, Ricky of Bristow, OK; five great-grandchildren: Madilynn Lively, Robert Goins, Chloe Goins, all of Pottsboro, TX, Aden Cheney of Etters, PA, Laylee Capps and Waverlee Capps both of Bristow, OK; as well as his friend and “angel nurse” Kris Bommelie of Stillwater. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers, Chet Cheney, Ed Cheney, Louie Cheney Jr., and Melvin Cheney; four sisters, Rowena Atkinson, Tressa Malcolm, Betty Adams, and Verna Busch; one grandson, Joey Cheney, and two great-grandchildren, Karis and Ryder Capps.
