Obituary for Joyce Felix

Joyce Elaine Self Felix, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed from this life Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014.

She was born Jan. 12, 1928, in Oklahoma City, the daughter of Luther and Isla Self, Joyce met her soul mate, Eldon Robert Felix, at age 15. They fell in love at first sight and upon his return from World War II USAF service, they were married on April 5, 1947, in McAlester. She attended Chickasha’s Oklahoma College for Women (now the University of Science and Arts in Oklahoma).

Upon her marriage, Joyce worked as a telephone operator until becoming a mother, devoting the next 18 years to homemaking. Throughout these years she expressed her creative talents as an accomplished seamstress, cook and decorator. When her first child left for college she began a career, beginning as a bank teller in Ponca City and eventually retiring as a Department of Human Services social worker. Her colleagues became friends and she was highly regarded throughout her professional career. She retired at age 62 in 1990.

Joyce and Eldon enjoyed their later working years and retirement, especially traveling with close friends from Ponca City. A special joy was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on a Caribbean cruise with their children and grandchildren in 1997. At age 60, Joyce began painting lessons and became an accomplished artist who expressed her talent through oil painting. She enjoyed making gifts of her paintings to family and friends.

Joyce is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Eldon; daughter, Sandy Shroyer and husband, Phil, of Plymouth, Mass. and son, Larry Felix and wife Leanna, of Ottawa, Kan. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jessica Crocker and husband Andrew, of Springfield, Mo.; Grayson Shroyer, of Austin, Texas; Brian Felix and wife Mandy, of Greenwood, Mo. and Amelia Shroyer ,of Stockholm, Sweden. She also leaves two great granddaughters, Kaylee and Jordyn Felix, of Greenwood, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Dolores Self Tomb.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at First Baptist Church in Ponca City. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery. Service is under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematorium.
