John Thomas Shotton, Jr.

February 29, 1928 – February 22, 2019

John Thomas Shotton, Jr., age 90, resident of Ponca City, Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2019 in Ponca City.

A memorial ceremony to celebrate John’s life will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, February 28, 2019 in the chapel at Trout Funeral Home & Crematory. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

John was born on February 29, 1928 to John Thomas Shotton, Sr. and Zella Fern Hahn Shotton in Garden City, KS. He was raised in Sublette, Kansas on his family’s farm. After high school, John continued farming. In 1949 John met and fell in love with Joan May Smiley. On October 2, 1949 they married in Satanta, KS. They eventually moved to Hugoton, Kansas where they raised their three children Randy, Gayland, and Julie.

Over the years he set out on his own; running his own construction company. John truly loved his job, which showed in the quality of work he provided for others. The family home in particular was his show place. Each home John lived in received his handiwork in making it his own while maintaining the architectural character of the original design. When John wasn’t working hard to provide for his loving family, he liked being outside. John enjoyed deer hunting, and later took up golfing, especially savoring the times he was able to golf with his sons. Family was a strong element in John’s life. His heart often yearned for them to all be together. John recalled with fond memories of the trip he planned to get all of his family to join him for a skiing trip at Wolf Creek. John will be missed dearly by his friends and loved ones.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Joan May Shotton of the home; cherished children: Randy Thomas Shotton and wife Oreesa of Ponca City, Gayland Lyle Shotton and wife Kitty of Phoenix, AZ, Julie Ellen Gaskill and husband Rod of Hugoton, KS. Adored grandchildren: John R. Shotton and wife Heather of Norman, OK, R.T. Shotton of Ponca City, Kit Shotton and wife Beth of Jaffery, NH, Jamie Shotton and wife Linda of Denver, CO, Dan Shotton of Seattle, WA, Nate Shotton and wife Vanessa of Denver, CO, Summer Box and husband Trey of Edmond, OK, Dax Gaskill and wife Effie of Hugoton, KS. Darling great grandchildren: Sophie Shotton, Sloan Shotton, Coshayta Shotton, R. T. Shotton III, Pressley Shotton, Luke Shotton, Mary Shotton, Leo Shotton, Kayla Shotton, Katie Shotton, Codie Shotton, Caitlyn Box, Kelsie Box, Frances Gaskill, Emmett Gaskill, Farrah Gaskill, and Ike Gaskill. His treasured siblings: Victor Shotton and wife Shirley of Wilcox, AZ, Mary Beth Baldini of Salt Lake City, UT, Mildred Garner of King, TX.

John was preceded in death by his parents as well as his siblings: Betty Frye, Aubrey Shotton, Ronald Shotton, and Virginia Sawyer.
