He was born in San Angelo, Texas on June 7, 1935, to Minnie Lee and Walter Leslie Wimberley, the youngest of eight children. He was educated in San Angelo public schools. Upon graduation, he attended San Angelo Jr. College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. He then attended The University of North Texas, where he received a Bachelor of Science and went on to also get a Master’s degree, both in Analytical Chemistry. While at UNT, he met Kathleen Smith. They were married on January 27, 1957, in Midland, Texas. They had three children–Debra Ruth, Walter Wayne, and Christopher Ray, as well as six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He accepted a job in the research department of Conoco in Ponca City in 1960 and was a research group leader for many years. He also loved working in the lab and had many published papers and patents. He took early retirement in 1992. For recreation, he played golf and tennis, and he loved to party. After retiring, he kept himself busy with woodworking and painting, and he and Kathleen traveled the world together.
Jerry was preceded in death by both parents, seven siblings, and a grandson.
He will be remembered by many for his colorful personality. There will be no service at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma at 445 Fairview Ave., Ponca City, OK, 74601.
