James Wesley Woods – Veteran
(August 24, 1932 – June 28, 2017)
James Wesley “Jim” Woods of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, June 28, 2017, in the Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home at the age of 84 years.
Jim Woods was born on August 24, 1932, in Ashton, Kansas, to Jasper Rosie and Sarah Lee (Dillard) Woods. As a young boy they moved to Blackwell where he attended rural school before transferring to Blackwell Public Schools. At the age of sixteen he entered the United States Army and served in Korea in 1948 to 1951. When it was discovered he was not old to enough to enlist, the Army gave him the choice to stay or go home. Jim chose to stay. Upon his return he transferred to the Army National Guard. He married Emma Ella Dougherty on December 24, 1954, in Blackwell and he worked for the Blackwell Zinc Company. During this time he returned to school and received a GED before attending college for three years at Northern Oklahoma Junior College and Central State University. He later worked at the flour mill before beginning his farming operation in 1963. He enjoyed fishing, playing pool and boxing. He coached boxing for many years in the Blackwell Pavilion at the fairgrounds. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Woods of Blackwell; a son, James Woods Jr. of Blackwell; a daughter, Margaret Ann Davis of Tulsa; and a sister, Margaret Louise Holt of Pueblo, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and a brother.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 30th in the Blackwell Cemetery with Chaplain Tom Howard of Hospice of North Central Oklahoma officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his honor with the Disabled American Veterans in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
