Jackie Dewayne Higgins of Ponca City, OK, left this life on February 19, 2023, in Wichita, KS, at 72 years young. Viewing will be from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, February 23, 2023, at Trout Funeral Home. The family will greet friend between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. A Funeral Ceremony will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, February 24, 2023, at Osage Heights Baptist Church, with Rev. Josh Garza officiating. Burial with military honors will immediately follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory, 505 W. Grand Ave, Ponca City, OK, 74601.
Jackie was born in Pawhuska, OK, on May 30, 1950, to Bill and Maxine Higgins. The family lived in the Osage and all the children went to the McCord school. Jack excelled in sports especially basketball, where he played on the main team all through grade school and was so small and fast that he played on the midget basketball. He was given the name “Jack Rabbit” by the principal Mr. Able. Jack went to Ponca City High but before finishing high school he decided to join the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and served a tour of Vietnam as well as Germany. After serving his country he returned to Ponca City.
Jack had 2 children, Jackie and Candy, and he enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, boating, skiing. Jack loved taking his family to little Sahara with his 4 wheelers. Jack married the love of his life, Kay, on February 5, 1993, and stayed in Ponca City and worked for the street department for 27 years where her retired from. The family also owned Higgins Hauling and tree service. After retirement Jack enjoyed spending every moment with his love and their best friends, Ernie and Paula Bales. Jack, Kay, Ernie, and Paula traveled all over, enjoying life and each other’s company, even going on several vacations together.
Jack was preceded in death by: his parents, Bill and Betty Higgins; 4 brothers, Gene, Gary, Billy, Donny; 2 sisters, Pat, Carol and several aunts and uncles.
Jack is survived by: the love of his life and wife of the home, Kay; 2 sons, Jackie Higgins and wife, Randi, of Ponca City, OK, James Lindsay and wife, Hollie, of Frederick, OK, and one daughter, Candy Hutchinson of Ponca City, OK.; six grandchildren: Kelbi and Ayceton Higgins; Josh Maze and Dalton Hollis; Chaz Lindsay and Darcie Wilson; 6 great-grandchildren, Airabella, Harper, Matteo, Kyler, Aiden, and Lyla, who knew him as Grandpa and PapPaw and he loved them all so dearly.
Pallbearers will be Chaz Lindsay, Trenton Wilson, Brad Plunk, Cody Bales, Brandon Bales, Chad Bales. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ernie Bales, Steve Bales, Mickey Dowell, Brandon Oliver, Crane Fowler, Kent Ball, Prudencio Mendo, Hunter Bales, Chad Baker, Ron Cordova, Michael Fleharty, Sean Fleharty, Jeremy Scott, Amanda Silvas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
