Floyd "Jack" Lee
(June 21, 1917 – October 14, 2015)
Floyd Lee, known by generations of Ponca City students as “Mr. Lee” and to his friends as “Jack”, died in the morning of October 14, 2015 after a brief illness.
He was born into a self-sufficient farm family of southeastern Oklahoma, and began a career as a schoolteacher before World War II. Drafted into the Army in January 1942, he “became a PFC by act of Congress” while serving as a combat infantryman in both the Pacific and in Europe. Awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his actions during December 1944, he returned to his unit in April 1945, continuing to serve as a sergeant until the end of the conflict.
Upon his return to Oklahoma he married Claryne Allen, also an Army veteran, and both relied upon the G.I. Bill to gain Masters degrees from Oklahoma State University . Their partnership resulted in careers as educators in Oklahoma’s public schools, as well as two children – John Allen Lee, of Seattle, Washington, and Sonya Lee Poole, whose death preceded both of her parents. Jack’s wife Claryne died in 2001. He is survived by his son John, and two grandchildren, Amanda Poole Wilson of St. Louis and Connor Lee of Seattle, as well as a sister-in-law, Roberta Lee of Ponca City, and a sister, Lois White of Houston, Texas.
Graveside services for Jack will held at Resthaven Memorial Park on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 3:00 p.m.
