September 20, 1925 – January 25, 2024

Elmore Bathurst of Blackwell, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024, at his home at the age of 98 years.

Elmore Bathurst was born on September 20, 1925, near Burlington, Oklahoma, to Harry A. and Iva Beatrice (Cloyd) Bathurst. He grew up in Alfalfa County attending rural schools and furthered his education by attending Oklahoma State University receiving a bachelor in agriculture in 1951. While in college in married Charlene Castle on December 26, 1950, in Enid, Oklahoma, and three children were born on this union. Upon graduation from college, Elmore began his wheat and livestock operation which he worked until the time of his death. His wife preceded him in death on April 15, 2017, and he continued to make Blackwell his home. His professional involvement included serving on the board of the Oklahoma Wheat Growers Association, as well as the National Association of Wheat Growers and he chaired the International Wheat Marketing Committee for five years. He also served his occupation as a board member on the Great Plains Wheat, Inc., Western Wheat Associates and on the U. S. Government Wheat Trade Team which studied the world wheat market potential. He was appointed as a director of the U. S. Wheat Industry serving two terms and was appointed to the Oklahoma Futures by the governor serving three terms. In 1977 he received the “Mr. Wheat” award from the Oklahoma Wheat Commission. His community involvement included serving on the Blackwell School Board for ten years and as a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by a daughter, Sherrie Ishmael of Monument, Colorado; a son, Daniel Bathurst of Blackwell; five grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Elaine McKInney; and two brothers, Verlan Bathurst and Loyd Bathurst and wife Rose Mary.

A memorial service will be scheduled for later this year.
