Edward “Ed” Eugene Dawes

October 12, 1939 – August 14, 2018

Edward Eugene “Ed” Dawes, age 78, long time resident of Ponca City, was called home by his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Stillwater Medical Center, OK.

A celebration of Ed’s honorable life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Central Baptist Church with Pastor John Waterloo officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

Ed was born on October 12, 1939 to Clifford Edward Dawes and Helen Marie Clark Dawes in Cushing, OK. Not long after he was born, Ed’s family moved to Arkansas City where his father began working for the Santa Fe Railroad. When Ed was four years old, his family relocated to Ponca City where he attended school, graduating in the class of 1957. Falling in love as high school sweethearts, Ed finally popped the question to Sharon Batt, “Would you like to grow old with me?” and together they set off on an adventurous and truly spectacular 58 years of wonderful marriage. Ed attended Northern Oklahoma College where he earned an associate degree in mechanical engineering. In the midst of continuing his pursuit for higher education at Oklahoma State University, Ed was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Nuremburg, Germany. It was during this time that son Damon was born. In December of 1964, the family returned to Ponca City and Ed began working for Conoco as a draftsman in the Process Engineering Department. Six years later, daughter Heather came along and their blessed family of four was complete. Ed retired as a Conoco employee in 1997, but continued serving as an independent contractor for twelve years thereafter. As well, Ed continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve after his active duty discharge, honorably serving his country for a total of 31 years before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1999.

Ed was truly a man to be admired. His hard work ethic, strong morals, integrity and loyalty blessed those with whom he interacted. As a faithful member of Central Baptist Church, Ed internalized the messages of faith, living his faith and helping others as he saw the need. Family was of incredible importance to Ed. He relished spending time with his wife sitting on the patio in the quiet of the evening. When his children were younger, Ed was there, present for all of the important events in their life as their #1 supporter and most enthusiastic fan. Ed’s grandchildren brought tremendous joy into his life and he absolutely loved spending time playing games and cards and working jigsaw puzzles with them. Ed enjoyed many hobbies but his ultimate passion was most certainly fishing – he was always angling for that bigger bass to beat the one before! The camaraderie he shared with all of his fishing buddies was like no other. He also loved to hunt and play golf. He was a perfectionist when it came to his yard and spent countless hours watching all of the birds who made their home there; martins, cardinals and hummingbirds were his favorites. He was passionate about traveling with his wife to places such as Canada and Colorado and especially treasured all of the trips that they shared with friends on motorcycle trips. His Tai Chi classes at Conoco were always a high priority and he became so very fond of the friends he met there. Meet up with Ed anywhere and he always had a friendly smile, an immediate handshake or warm hug and a generous spirit towards every person he encountered… except when he was forced to share his loving wife’s delicious chocolate pie. The impact of the life that Eddy Dawes lived will be felt by many for years to come and he will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his wife Sharon of the home; son Damon Edward Dawes of Ponca City; daughter Heather Nicole Brown and husband Brandon of Coppell, TX; sister Judy Thompson of Ponca City; grandchildren Blake Edward Dawes, Tatum Nicole Brown, Addison Noelle Brown; great granddaughter Allye Lane Bible; and numerous very special and cherished nephews and nieces.

Preceded in death by Father, Clifford Edward Dawes; Mother, Helen Marie Dawes; and Grandson Chace Dawes.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Al Moore, Gerald Wilson, Ray and Pat Meek, Farhad Znooze, John Bley, and Alvin “Covey” Moore
