Earlene Matthiessen
(March 7, 1938 – May 1, 2016)
Ruby Earlene (Marlar) Matthiessen, 78, passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at her home to be with her Heavenly father and Earthly father. Earlene was born on March 7, 1938 in Ponca City to Clyde and Ruby Marlar. She married Charles “Al” Matthiessen in 1955. He built the first home they lived in together in Medford, N.J. They moved back to Ponca City in 1972.
Family always came first. Earlene enjoyed sewing, planting herbs and vegetables, and riding horses. She was a homemaker until her children were in junior high when she began her job as a bus driver for the Ponca City School system. She loved children and drove the school bus for over 20 years until retirement. Earlene also worked as a para-professional teaching at the American Legion Children’s Home for 10-15 years. Earlene was an avid bowler. She was on the State Board of Directors for OK State Women’s Bowling Association, traveled on a small bowling team, was a local coach for YABA, secretary for Jack & Jill league for many years, and won many awards and achievements. Christmas was her favorite holiday and everyone was expected to be present. She was known as “mom mom” and took great delight in her children and grandchildren and spent as much time as possible with them. She was completely invested in her family and enjoyed playing scrabble and other family games, taught basic sewing and cooking skills, cross stitch and how to bowl.
Earlene was preceded in death by her father, Clyde Earl Marlar, mother, Ruby Bloxsom, sisters, Josephine Marlar Christian, Geraldine Marlar, Thomasine Marlar, Saleta Marlar Nuttle, and her brother, C.E. Marlar.
She is survived by her sister, Clydella Marlar of Texas, brother, Tommy Marlar of Ponca City, children, Debbie and husband, Randall Ivie of Spokane, MO, Janice and husband, Jeff Hernandez of Ponca City, Sandy and husband, Kendall Kimber of Wagoner, James and Michelle Matthiessen of Ponca City, grandchildren, Jacob Ivie (Captain USAF) who is currently overseas and wife, Odilia (USAF, Ret.) of Germany, Tiffany Ivie Orthman and husband, David (USMC & MOANG Veteran) of Spokane, MO, Joanna Ivie Ellis (Airman 1st Class, USAF Reserves) and husband, Eric of Willard, MO, Brent Horton of Ponca City, Josh Horton of Ponca City, Miranda Horton of Ponca City, Jeremy Humble of Ponca City, James Matthiessen of Tulsa, Austin Matthiessen and wife, Chevelle of Midsest City, great-grandchildren, Kyle Gibson, Chelsey Gibson, Brit Bonnet, Thor Orthman, Vinnie Orthman, Viktor Orthman, Titan Orthman, Nimmy Matthiessen, Mily Matthiessen, David Matthiessen, great-greatgrandchild, Karmine Gibson.
Earlene will be available for viewing from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m on Thursday May 5, 2016 and Friday, May 6, 2016 at Trout Funeral Home and Crematory. A funeral service will be held at Ranch Drive Baptist Church on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery.
