April 16, 1929 – January 1, 2022
Dorothy Ruth Scott Garrett, age 92, a cherished mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother, long-time educator and resident of Ponca City, Oklahoma, passed away January 1, 2022, at Stillwater Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 8, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Ponca City, 218 South Sixth Street in Ponca City. Masks will be required at the service. Dorothy Ruth Hollander was born April 16, 1929, in Goltry, Oklahoma. She was the fifth of seven children born to William Gustav Hollander and Charlotte Elizabeth Rathbun Hollander. She graduated from Goltry High School in 1947, received her Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma A & M (OSU) in 1951, and a Master of Science degree in Home Economics from Oklahoma State University in 1957. Dorothy’s working career was thirty years teaching high school Home Economics in Fairview, Tonkawa, and Ponca City.
Dorothy married Raymond Lewis Scott in 1958 and remained a devoted wife until his death in 1990. Children of the marriage were Steven Ray Scott of Norman, OK and Ricky Lee Scott of Ponca City. Ten years after Raymond’s passing, Dorothy married Roland Garrett, of Tulsa, and gained a bonus family. The couple resided in Tulsa until Roland’s passing in 2012. Soon thereafter, she returned to live in Ponca City.
Dorothy was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, an association of key women educators, Retired Teachers Association, and First Baptist Church activities, as well as proudly attending her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s events.
Survivors include: children Steve Scott and his wife Catherine of Norman; Rick Scott and his wife Carol of Ponca City; grandchildren April Knight and her husband Tyler; Hayden Scott and his wife Amber, all of Ponca City; Hayley Stillwell and her husband Caleb, of New York City; Madeline (Maddie) Farris and her husband Tyler of Norman; Alexa Scott of Oklahoma City and Charlotte Scott of Norman; great-grandchildren Natalie, Amelia, and Emersyn Knight; the soon-to-be Scottie Farris; sisters Vivian Burton of Wasilla, AK; Margo Thein of Oklahoma City; Lillian Porter and her husband Mike of Enid, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her cherished Garrett family – Dr. Bob Garrett and wife Stephanie, Debbie Bewley and husband Bob, stepson-in-law, Ralph Ward, and five step-grandchildren, and eight step-great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her first husband Raymond Scott and second husband Roland Garrett; sisters Anna-Marie Evans of Perkins, OK; Naomi Platt of Ft. Smith AR; and brother Gerald Hollander of Perry, OK; stepdaughter Anne Garrett Ward, of Sand Springs.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Ponca City or Ponca City Public Schools Gifts & Endowments Fund.
