Doris Ellen Culp Stanley, age 92, long time resident of Ponca CIty passed away Friday, September 15, 2017 in Oklahoma City.
Doris was born October 14, 1924 in Duncan, OK. Doris graduated from Duncan High School in 1942, Gulf Park Mississippi College in 1944 and the University of Oklahoma Fine Arts in 1946. Subsequently, Doris earned a Masters in Education from Oklahoma State University.
Doris had a lifelong love of art. Doris loved painting and pottery, and was a part of the Ponca City Daubers, the artists and art enthusiasts who founded the Ponca City Arts Association. She served on the board of the Arts Association, was an instructor at Northern Oklahoma College’s Department of Fine Arts, and was a board member of the Ponca City Library. During her time serving the library, Doris administered and oversaw restoration of the library’s Matzene Art Collection of Western and Oriental Art.
As a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Ponca City, Doris served on many committees and for years was a member of the Good Samaritans class. Until recent years, she was active in the Alpha Chi Omega alumni chapter in Kay County and in Daughters of the American Revolution.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband Howard George Stanley, parents Matthew and Mabel Culp of Duncan, OK, brothers Matthew, Jr. of Duncan, OK and Neal of Cushing, OK as well as two infant children.
Survivors include her son Craig Stanley and wife Mary of Oklahoma City, daughter Ellen Callihan of Henderson, NV, grandchildren: Brian Callihan and wife Kellly of Midland, MI; Brad Callihan and wife Ashley of Henderson, NV and Emily Stanley and husband partner Scott Horton of Fredericksburg, VA; great grandchildren: Liam, Lucas, Elizabeth, Mayley, Lainey, and Ivy.
A memorial ceremony for Doris will take place 10:30am Friday, September 29, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Ponca City with Pastor Mike Smith officiating.
