Doris was born in Ponca City on January 13, 1927, to Cecil and Alta (Swinney) Graham. She was lovingly referred to as “Sissie” by her younger sisters and family friends, and later called “Aunt Sissie” by her sisters’ children. A 1945 graduate of Ponca City High School, Doris worked at Virtues Department Store until her marriage to Leon Lewis on May 4, 1947. Her wedding dress was fashioned from a silk parachute Leon brought back from Japan following World War II. The couple were married for 72 years and raised four children. They moved to Kansas in 1955, and eventually settled on a farm near Oskaloosa, where they devoted many hours that first year into constructing their new home. Following retirement in 1990, Doris and Leon returned to Ponca City. Doris spent her final years in the care of her youngest daughter in Kansas.

Doris was always active and kept busy with many hobbies. She was involved in numerous church ministries, was an avid reader, shared regular walks with her sister Myrna, and was always working on a sewing, crochet, or craft project. She enjoyed making clothes for her family and made sure her grandchildren were never without a homemade outfit for Easter, Christmas and the new school year. She always cooked, baked, and preserved food from her garden and hosted many holiday gatherings, complete with delicious desserts and candy for all to enjoy.

Survivors include: three daughters, Ila Axton of Wamego, KS, Karen (Roger) Qualls of Andover, KS, and Darla (Vernon) Treiber of Rose Hill, KS; son, Randall Lewis of Wamego, KS; six grandchildren, Neal, Dale and Kyle Axton, Michelle Thorne, Erin Smith and Luke Treiber; six granddaughters, Sadie, Lydia, Elliana, Hannah and Ava Thorne and Lily Treiber; sister, Myrna (Ronnie) Shelton of Ponca City; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were: her husband; her parents; an infant brother; and a sister, Aileen Potter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Northeast Baptist Church, 2200 N. Pecan Road, Ponca City.
