Chester Leroy Haynes – Veteran

June 4, 1945 – February 16, 2019

Chester Leroy Haynes, long time resident of Ponca City and Oklahoma City has passed away. He was 73 years old. Traditional Tribal Services will be held at the Ponca United Methodist Church in White Eagle. The Feast will begin at noon on Tuesday, February 19, 2019. Burial will follow at the Ponca Indian Cemetery. Pastor Jim White will officiate. Pallbearers will include Tank Rasha, Willis Rasha, James Page, Mauricio Garcia, Talbert Cole, Joel Perez-Vargas, and Juan Perez-Vargas, Jr.

Chester was born to Guy T. Haynes and Jennie Belvin Kemble Haynes in Ponca City on June 4, 1945. He had a large family of eight brothers and five sisters. He attended school in White Eagle. After graduating from high school, Chester joined the U.S. Navy where he served for four years. He was a member of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma and made beautiful shawls. He enjoyed going to the dances and watching the festivities. Chester lived in Oklahoma City for many years. He worked as a chef for more than 20 years at the Jesus House there. He made many friends during his time as a chef and his absence will be felt deeply.

He was preceded in death by his mother and step father Funston King, seven brothers: Woodrow King, John King, Tillman King, Philmore, King, Douglas King, Francis King, and Frederick King, as well as two sisters: Pauline Ward and Cora Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by his grandmother Katherine Kemble who helped raise him.

He is survived by his sisters Elizabeth Loera, Nellie King and Julia Colbert, brother Robert King LeClair and numerous nieces and nephews.
