Charlie Lawhon
July 26, 1946 – February 1, 2019
Carol L. “Charlie” Lawhon of Blackwell, Oklahoma, passed away Friday, February 1, 2019, at his home at the age of 72 years.
Charlie Lawhon was born on July 26, 1946, in Taloga, Oklahoma, to John and Inabel (Hicks) Lawhon. He grew up on a farm on the South Canadian River in Western Oklahoma, where his love for the outdoors began. He enjoyed exploring, working on the farm, riding his horse on the river, playing baseball and traveling to Texas with his father during summer harvest.
Upon graduation, Charlie enlisted in the United States Army where he served two years as an expert rifleman and sharpshooter, receiving the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
Charlie attended Oklahoma State University, where he studied petroleum engineering and met the love of his life, Janice Savage. They were married on December 29, 1972, in Blackwell and celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary this past December.
Charlie was a hardworking, jack of all trades, who never met a stranger. He started his career at Conoco-Phillips, where he worked in the petroleum engineering department. He later went on to purchase, own and operate Hutton Davis Paint in downtown Blackwell. Upon the sale of Davis Paint, he re-entered the oilfield and retired from PPG Trucking.
Charlie had a love for the mountains of Colorado, where he took his family for two weeks every summer vacation. He also loved to hunt, fish, camp and anything outdoors with his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball in the summers. His love for the outdoors was passed down to his family and he relished in their interests and any possible successes. He was an engineer at heart, who loved to tinker, and spend time in his shop. One of his greatest joys was rebuilding and restoring a 1943 Willy Jeep, with his son, Todd.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Lawhon of Blackwell; a daughter, Catina D’Achille and husband Nick of Edmond; a son, Todd Lawhon and wife Peyton of Newkirk; a sister, Donna McClaughlin of Oklahoma City; and six grandchildren, Isabella, Dillon and Brady D’Achille of Edmond, and Gus, John and Tallyn Lawhon of Newkirk.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Dean Lawhon.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 5th in the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell with Rev. Susan Rice of the Newkirk Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery with military rites performed by the United States Army.
